About the Event
St. Kilda: Island on the Edge of the World – Elizabeth Ross
Elizabeth will take us to magical St. Kilda, the most westerly inhabited part of the United Kingdom. Forty miles off the west coast of the Outer Hebrides, this archipelago, representing remnants of a long-extinct ring volcano, supported a human population for two millennia. The maximum number of people living on St. Kilda probably never exceeded 180, and the last 36 inhabitants were evacuated in 1930. It became one of Scotland's six World Heritage Sites in 1986 and is one of the few in the world to hold joint status for both its natural and cultural qualities. Unique wildlife, staggering scenery, and emotive ruins make St. Kilda a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Getting there can be a real challenge, but that seems to add to the romance of this remarkable place.
